Artists for Altruism

Building a charitable, creative brand from scratch

Overview

As a personal project-turned-business, I launched the website Artists for Altruism in the midst of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic in order to lend a hand to the community in a time of need.

Artists for Altruism was a network of charity artists. The purpose was to connect buyers and artists who share a common passion for charity by showcasing, categorizing, and promoting various artists and charities. Buyers can commission charity artists for art, with some or all of their proceeds going to a charity of their choosing. Artists can employ their creative hobby/talent for a greater cause.

The launch in May 2020, aided by an executive planning committee, led to 30+ international artists recruited, $1000+ raised in less than 2 months through a solo campaign, and +100% social conversion numbers to the website. In this way, Art4Alt helped change the world for the better—creatively.

Problem

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, charities faced an increased need for PPE donations, racial injustice awareness, and healthcare support. At the same time, there was a rising network of artists who opened charity commissions, but the majority were independent and had trouble gaining awareness on social media.

Solution

Start an organization serving as the platform to connect donors and charity artists. Amplify the efforts of charity artists by showcasing their art and contact info, while providing a shopping center for people who can donate to a cause and receive commissioned art as an added bonus.

Goals

  • Brand Essence: Define company values, vision, and goals. Recruit initial artists and executive board
  • Visuals: Create logo, website, and color palette. Test a solo campaign with new visuals
  • Social Presence: Launch Instagram giveaway, plan & create content for social use

Tactics

Brand Essence

Social Presence

Brand Essence

After defining the 'why' behind the company, I reached out to artists around the globe through Instagram, LinkedIn, and cold emailing. This included the executive board, which was a standing committee to plan and execute the initial launch in May 2020.

Visuals

Social Presence

Brand Essence

Using tools such as Canva, I created central brand assets and a style guide from scratch. The style guide included various logo versions, font guidelines, a brand color palette, and a definition of the brand voice/tone. I then used my own charity commissions to test the platform.

With the executive board, I spearheaded the planning for the company's initial launch on Instagram, including the timeline, deliverables, content, and key stakeholders (the joint giveaway involved inputs from numerous micro-influencers).

I think it's common for young artists to have more time than money available to them. Donation commissions are a really effective way to leverage that and take care of our surrounding communities!

Results & Key Learnings

  • 30+ international artists recruited
  • $1000+ raised in less than 2 months
  • +100% social conversion numbers to site
  • +1600% accounts engaged months after launch
  • 8 new artists recruited within 1 month
  • 532 new followers within 1 month

  1. Every plan needs multiple backup plans. I had a lot of wrenches thrown in during the weeks leading up to the plan, such as artists backing out and giveaway merch not arriving. I had to learn to adapt and stay flexible.
  2. SEO pays off. After implementing an SEO plan and defining choice keywords, the traffic to the site increased dramatically.
  3. Change is made through community. I launched this personal project with the help of family, friends, and supporters. It's so strong because of the talented artists that made up the Art4Alt community.

It makes me feel a lot better that my money is going toward a good cause, AND I get to support artists!

Charity Buyer

Next Steps

Artists for Altruism demonstrated the power connecting buyers and charity artists all around the world. I hope to continue giving back to communities through my art and the art of others in future projects.
